Can you please explain in more detail what behavior you see when the controller doesn't detect the accelerometer?

Also please let us know how you are communicating with the ADXL345. I2C, SPI? If you can send a scope or logic analyzer capture of your digital communication lines, that would likely be helpful for debugging.
