As Dave mentioned, it can operate as a digital only device.  But if you are also considering TDM mode, the channel assignments at first glance can be confusing because there is not a one-to-one correspondence with the SIgmaStudio channel number and the physical TDM slot channel number    But the on-line Wiki offers a good explanation on the audio signal flow between SigmaStudio channel and I2S and TDM slot assignments.
